This airsoft replica is based on a variant of the Canadian Long Branch Arsenal STEN Mk. II, manufactured as part of Allied aid to the Republic of China during the Second World War. Distinctively, it bears Chinese characters on the top of the magazine housing. Approximately 72,882 Chinese-marked STEN Mk. II submachine guns were allocated for China, although available evidence suggests that not all of them ultimately reached Chinese forces.
The Chinese character markings on the magazine housing are as follows:
-
Top line: 「司登」 (si deng), a phonetic transliteration of "STEN".
-
Second line: 「手提機槍」 (shou ti ji qiang), meaning "submachine gun" (literally, "hand-held machine gun").
-
Bottom line: 「加拿大造」 (jia na da zao), meaning "Made in Canada".
Following Japan's surrender in 1945, the Chinese Civil War resumed, and these Canadian-made STEN guns ultimately found their way into the hands of both Nationalist and Communist forces. After the Nationalist Government retreated to Taiwan, surviving Chinese-marked STEN guns—along with the domestically produced Model 38 submachine gun—were issued to Army frogmen, Military Police, civilian police, and the Taiwan Garrison Command auxiliary forces stationed on Taiwan and its outlying islands.
Surviving ROC military examples of these Chinese-marked STEN guns are now preserved by the Ordnance Readiness and Development Center (ORDC) of the ROC Armed Forces. Chinese-marked STEN Mk. II submachine guns were also captured from Communist forces during both the Korean War and the Malayan Emergency.
Most documented Chinese-marked STEN guns fall within the 9L and 10L serial number blocks. This led collectors to hypothesize that these production blocks were intended for China, a view later supported by archival information preserved by the ORDC. These records, together with surviving examples, also indicate that the majority of Canadian-made, Chinese-marked STEN guns used in the Chinese theater were produced in 1944, while most 1945-dated production remained in Canada or was diverted to other destinations.
Accordingly, Northeast Airsoft has chosen to reproduce the historically appropriate 1944 production markings on this replica, faithfully reflecting the configuration most commonly associated with Chinese-service Long Branch STEN Mk. II submachine guns.
